Also, sorry, but I'm that reader who proofreads (used to teach writing, was in grad school forever)I could be wrong, but isn't the maritime museum in Victoria, not Mabou? Also, part of anatomy mentioned in the heated coin bit is not quite correct. Thought I might mention in case you want to check those two oints. As a native French speaker, I didn't even notice that cacolaco stood for Coca-Cola. I thought it was some kind of hot cocoa :)<br />The phonetic spelling might be more refreshing and amusing to French speakers (and readers), since the gap between written and spoken French is a lot bigger than in English. Hence, Queneau's writing feels very playful and liberatory. As for the blue jeans, I think their significance for Zazie is simple (and could be linked to the ponetic writing): they allow for more freedom of movement than a skirt. She's also a tomboy in her speech (in 1950s France, little girls aren't supposed to swear), so it would make sense that she would like to wear pants. This transition might be more evident in the movie, where she wears a pleated skirt in the beginning. Hamlet says something very similar to Yorick’s skull: “ Now get you to my lady's chamber, and tell her, let her paint an inch thick, to this favour she must come.
